My name is Larisa Cicila, I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY29432) and I am really excited about the opportunity to work with you! My first goal as a clinician is to cultivate a warm, friendly and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment that will help you reach whatever goals you have for treatment. Through building a strong, collaborative relationship with you, the client, I hope to empower you to develop more effective strategies to cope with every day stress, anxiety, depression or any number of difficulties that might bring you in to therapy at this time. I work collaboratively with you to identify goals of treatment and develop an effective treatment plan, while also being flexible enough during treatment to re-calibrate goals, change the focus of treatment and/or test out other approaches to reaching your goals.
My approach is largely rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy with significant emphasis on skill building and mindfulness in the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy tradition. I am a true generalist and have worked with a diverse client base to address a multitude of presenting problems, including anxiety, depression, stress management, phobias, health concerns (e.g. insomnia), sexual functioning and personal growth. My training at three different VA hospitals, including systems in Miami, Tampa and San Diego, have led to a deep commitment to providing care to our nation's veterans.
Beyond my extensive experience working with clients in individual therapy, I also have specialized skills in couple and sex therapy. I spent 5 years of my graduate career studying novel approaches to delivering couple therapy and recently completed a year long postdoctoral fellowship at the San Diego VA Healthcare Systems focused solely on honing my couple therapy skills. My approach in couple therapy is rooted in both Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
On a personal note, although I've lived all over the country (Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, Florida), San Diego has been my favorite place so far. San Diego has sparked am obsession with being in nature and I can be found either hiking \ or visiting a nearby National Park most weekends. In my spare time, I love being involved in creative hobbies including singing, dancing and improv.
Dr. Cicila is an independent contractor for Kirstin Filizetti, PhD. Independent contractors are responsible for the legal and ethical psychotherapy treatment of their own clients while working independently from the other providers in the office.
